Take the HR Audit

This simple checklist is to enable you to self assess how robust your people strategy is in your business. With Employment Law being complex and costly – if you get it wrong! – you need to take action as prevention is always better then regret.

STEP 1/10 - ABOUT YOU

STEP 2/10 - RECRUITMENT

Do you know the legal rights of people post interview?
Is your process of selection robust enough to defend a legal challenge of discrimination?
Have the people in your business been trained on how to interview?
Do you check references and qualifications?
Do you have an inductions checklist including health and safety?

STEP 3/10 - PAY

Can your pay structure withstand a legal equal pay challenge?
Do you adhere to the minimum wage act?
Do you monitor and keep aware of market forces?
Do you know how to respond to an equality questionnaire?

STEP 4/10 - PERFORMANCE

Do you/your managers set SMART objectives?
Do you review performance through an appraisal?
Do your managers have the skills to manage a poor performer?
Do you have a Performance Improvement system?
Do you have a Performance Development Programme?

STEP 5/10 - MANAGING CHANGE/REDUNDANCIES

Do you know the laws surrounding business reorganisation?
Do you have a robust redundancy policy?
Does your contract give you full flexibility to respond to market downturns?
Do you know how to negotiate changes to terms and conditions?
Do you have a Contract of Employment that is less then 2 years old?

STEP 6/10 - FLEXIBLE WORKING AND FAMILY FRIENDLY LAWS

Do you know how to respond to a request?
Do you have a policy?
Do you know your employees legal rights?
Do you know the correct process to follow to avoid litigation?
Do you know maternity policies and procedures?

STEP 7/10 - SICKNESS & ABSENCE

Do you monitor sickness - long term and short term?
Do you know how to manage sickness?
Do you know how to remove a persistent offender?
Do you know what absences are allowed legally?
Do you understand the parental laws surrounding absence?

STEP 8/10 - EQUALITY & DIVERSITY

Do you have a policy?
Do your managers know how to apply this policy and are they trained?
Do your managers know how to respond to an equality challenge?
Is E&D taken into account at recruitment?
Do your managers understand the protected characteristics of the new Equality laws?

STEP 9/10 - EMPLOYEE REPRESENTATION & COMMUNICATION

Do you have a staff handbook clearly setting out what is expected from staff - policies and procedures?
Do you know how to respond to a member of staff who is in a union?
Do you have a clear communication strategy of team meetings etc?
Are your managers trained on how to conduct one to one meetings with staff to avoid any litigation accusations?
Do you know how to deal with staff with an 'attitude' issue?

STEP 10/10 - DISCIPLINARY & GRIEVANCES

Do you know the legal code?
Do you have a policy for Disciplinary or a Grievance meeting?
Are your managers capable of undertaking a Disciplinary or a Grievance meeting?
Do you know how to investigate an issue?
Do you know how to deal with an appeal?
